Estimate, Compensate, Iterate: Joint Motion Estimation and Compensation in 4-D Cardiac C-arm Computed Tomography

چکیده
C-arm computed tomography reconstruction of multiple cardiac phases could provide a highly useful tool to interventional cardiologists in the catheter laboratory. Today, however, for clinically reasonable acquisition protocols the achievable image quality is still severely limited due to undersampling artifacts. We propose an iterative optimization scheme combining image registration, motion compensation and spatiotemporal regularization to improve upon the state-of-the-art w. r. t. image quality and accuracy of motion estimation. Evaluation of clinical cases indicates an improved visual appearance and temporal consistency, evidenced by a strong decrease in temporal variance in uncontrasted regions accompanied by an increased sharpness of the contrasted left ventricular blood pool boundary. In a phantom study, the universal image quality index proposed by Wang et al. is raised from 0.80 to 0.95, with 1.0 corresponding to a perfect match with the ground truth. The results lay a promising foundation for interventional cardiac functional analysis.

Clinical Data Evaluation of C-arm-based Motion Compensated Coronary Artery Reconstruction
Angiographic C-arm systems are capable of performing computed tomography (CT) imaging for assisting in therapy planning, performance and assessment. Due to the long acquisition time, C-arm CT of dynamic structures is challenging. Cardiac motion has to be estimated and compensated in the reconstruction step. The quality of the motion estimation algorithm mainly dictates the resulting image quali...

Long acquisition times of several seconds lead to image artifacts in cardiac C-arm CT. While ECG gating is able to select a certain heart phase, residual artifacts are mostly caused by respiratory motion. In order to improve image quality, it is important to accurately estimate the breathing motion that occurred during image acquisition. It has been shown that diaphragmmotion is correlated to t...
متن کاملMotion Compensated Fan-Beam CT by Enforcing Fourier Properties of the Sinogram
In computed tomography involuntary patient motion can lead to a severe degradation of image quality. Most of the motion estimation methods rely on additional information, such as fiducial markers or an ECG signal. In contrast, data driven motion estimation exists which aims to estimate the motion directly from the acquired projections. This is typically achieved by the optimization of an error ...
متن کاملImage-based compensation for involuntary motion in weight-bearing C-arm cone-beam CT scanning of knees
We previously introduced four fiducial marker-based strategies to compensate for involuntary knee-joint motion during weight-bearing C-arm CT scanning of the lower body. 2D methods showed significant reduction of motionrelated artifacts, but 3D methods worked best. However, previous methods led to increased examination times and patient discomfort caused by the marker attachment process. Moreov...
متن کاملAutomatic 3D Motion Estimation of Left Ventricle from C-arm Rotational Angiocardiography Using a Prior Motion Model and Learning Based Boundary Detector
Compared to pre-operative imaging modalities, it is more convenient to estimate the current cardiac physiological status from C-arm angiocardiography since C-arm is a widely used intra-operative imaging modality to guide many cardiac interventions. The 3D shape and motion of the left ventricle (LV) estimated from rotational angiocardiography provide important cardiac function measurements, e.g....
